Women in Islamic History • Lesson 7.9
Curriculum Breakdown
Rabia al-Adawiyya
Rabia al-Adawiyya was a legendary saint and mystic whose life was defined by Pure Love for Allah. She transformed Islamic spirituality with her focus on sincere devotion.
The Path of Love
Rabia was born into poverty and experienced slavery, but her heart remained free. She famously taught that one should worship Allah out of love for His beauty, not just out of fear of Hell or desire for Paradise.
Spiritual Influence
Her wisdom and poetry influenced countless scholars and seekers. She established a model of "Ghub al-Ilahi" (Divine Love) that remains a cornerstone of Islamic spirituality and asceticism (Zuhd).
"O Allah! If I worship You for fear of Hell, burn me in Hell; and if I worship You in hope of Paradise, exclude me from Paradise. But if I worship You for Your own sake, grudge me not Your everlasting Beauty."
Rabia al-Adawiyya
