Women in Islamic History • Lesson 7.6
Curriculum Breakdown
Sumayyah bint Khayyat
Sumayyah (ra) was the first martyr in Islam. Her ultimate sacrifice for her faith remains a beacon of steadfastness for all believers.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
Sumayyah (ra) and her family were among the first to embrace Islam in Makkah. They were subjected to brutal torture by the Banu Makhzum. Despite the pain, she refused to renounce her faith in the Oneness of Allah.
Steadfastness (Sabr)
Her death at the hands of Abu Jahl marked a turning point. She died with the words of Tawhid on her lips, becoming the first person to enter Paradise from the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ) through martyrdom.
"Patience, O family of Yasir! For your destination is Paradise."
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
Modern Applications
Unwavering commitment to core values despite social pressure.
Resisting injustice and oppression with spiritual strength.
Recognizing that true success is in the Akhirah (Hereafter).
Critical Reflection
