Women in Islamic History • Lesson 7.5
Curriculum Breakdown
Nusaybah bint Ka'b
Known as Umm Umarah, Nusaybah (ra) was a brave defender of the Prophet (ﷺ) on the battlefield. Her courage at the Battle of Uhud is legendary.
The Brave Defender
Nusaybah (ra) was one of the two women who pledged allegiance at Aqaba. During the Battle of Uhud, when the Muslims were in a difficult position, she shielded the Prophet (ﷺ) with her own body, sustaining 12 wounds.
Courage and Devotion
When the Prophet (ﷺ) saw her bravery, he made Dua for her and her family to be his companions in Paradise. Her life refutes the idea that women have no role in protecting the community.
"I did not look to the right nor the left on the day of Uhud except that I saw Nusaybah bint Ka'b fighting in front of me."
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
