Women in Islamic History • Lesson 7.12
Curriculum Breakdown

Umm al-Darda

Umm al-Darda was a celebrated scholar of Damascus who taught both men and women. She was a master of Hadith and Fiqh (jurisprudence).

The Scholar of Damascus

Umm al-Darda (the younger) was known for her immense knowledge and her practice of praying in the men's section of the mosque. She was a teacher to the Caliph Abdul Malik ibn Marwan and countless other scholars.

Authority in Knowledge

She was highly respected for her legal opinions and her mastery of difficult texts. Her life demonstrates that in the Islamic tradition, knowledge has no gender; whoever masters it becomes an authority.

"I have sought worship in everything, but I found nothing like sitting and sharing knowledge with scholars."
