Fatima al-Fihri

Fatima al-Fihri was a visionary who founded the University of al-Qarawiyyin in 859 CE, the oldest continuously operating educational institution in the world.

Vision for Knowledge

After inheriting a large sum, Fatima (ra) chose to invest it in the eternal reward of knowledge (Sadaqah Jariyah). She fasted and prayed every day during the construction of the mosque and university in Fez, Morocco.

Legacy of Learning

Her university became a beacon for scholars of mathematics, medicine, astronomy, and theology from all over the world. Her life proves that Muslim women were at the forefront of institutionalizing education.

"The foundations of modern higher education were laid by a Muslim woman driven by faith and the desire for public good."
