Science, Knowledge & Civilization • Lesson 8.7
Curriculum Breakdown
Al-Biruni
Al-Biruni was a master of geography, astronomy, and anthropology. He calculated the Earth's radius with incredible accuracy 1,000 years ago.
Measuring the World
Using a mountain in modern Pakistan and complex trigonometry, al-Biruni calculated the Earth's radius to within 1% of the modern satellite-measured value.
Intercultural Understanding
He is also considered the father of "Indology" and comparative religion for his objective and respectful study of Indian culture and faith traditions.
"Truth is the goal of science, and a scientist must be free from prejudice and partisan spirit."
Al-Biruni
Modern Applications
Excelling in mathematics and Earth sciences.
Engaging in cross-cultural and interfaith studies with objectivity.
Maintaining intellectual humility when facing the vastness of creation.
Critical Reflection
What allowed al-Biruni to be so accurate without modern technology?
How does studying other cultures help us understand our own faith better?
How can I remove "prejudice" from my own learning process?
Weekly Protocol
Steps to learn this lesson.
1Research al-Biruni's mountain experiment to understand the math involved.
2Read a short article about a culture different from your own today.
3Practice a trigonometry problem or review a geometry concept.
Internalize the knowledge to progress
