Navigating Social Media: Ethics and Mindfulness
Social media is a powerful tool for connection and information, but it also presents significant spiritual and ethical risks. Ghibah (backbiting), Namimah (slander), Riya (showing off), and wasted time are some of the challenges.
Foundations
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance. (Quran 49:6). Truthfulness (Sidq): Always verify information before sharing. Avoid spreading rumors or unconfirmed news.
Guarding the Heart
Be mindful of how social media affects your emotional state. Avoid content that triggers envy, arrogance, or inappropriate desires. Use social media as a platform for Dawah, spreading benefit, and connecting for good purposes, rather than mindless scrolling.
"He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good or keep silent."
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
Modern Applications
Protect your privacy and the privacy of others online.
Stand up against online bullying and toxic behavior.
Be wary of the "comparison trap" and remember that most content is a highlight reel.
