Islamic Spirituality - Tazkiyah & Ihsan • Lesson 2.7
Curriculum Breakdown
Sincerity
Ikhlas is the soul of all actions. Without it, the most magnificent deeds are like dust scattered by the wind.
Introduction
Ikhlas means purifying one's intention from any desire for show, praise, or worldly benefit. It is doing the act solely for the sake of Allah.
The Power of Niyyah (Intention)
"Actions are by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended." (Bukhari). A small act with a great intention can outweigh a massive act with a poor intention.
Signs of Sincerity
A sincere person is the same in public as they are in private. They don't seek praise from people and are not discouraged by their criticism.
"I have never treated anything more difficult than my intention, for it keeps changing on me."
Sufyan al-Thawri
Modern Applications
Be careful with sharing your good deeds on social media; keep some treasures hidden between you and Allah.
Audit your "Whys" regularly: "Why am I doing this? For Allah, or for my ego?"
Transform mundane actions (sleep, exercise, social time) into worship by renewing your intention.
Critical Reflection
Do I feel a "high" when people praise my religiousity?
Am I as diligent in my private prayers as I am in the Masjid?
What is the true motivation behind my service to others?
