Islamic Spirituality - Tazkiyah & Ihsan • Lesson 2.2
Curriculum Breakdown
Ihsan
Ihsan is the highest level of faith, where a believer reaches a state of spiritual excellence and constant awareness of the Divine presence.
Introduction
In the famous Hadith of Jibril, Ihsan was defined as: "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you." This dual consciousness—vision and watchfulness—is the peak of spirituality.
The Two Stations of Ihsan
1. Mushahadah (Contemplation): Worshipping as if seeing Allah through the eye of the heart (attaining high certainty).
2. Muraqabah (Watchfulness): Knowing that Allah is watching you at every moment (the station of sincerity and fear).
Excellence in Action
Ihsan also means doing everything with perfection and beauty. Whether it is a small act of kindness or a major act of worship, it should be done to the highest standard for the sake of Allah.
"Whoever studies Jurisprudence (Fiqh) without Tasawwuf (Spirituality) becomes a sinner; whoever studies Tasawwuf without Fiqh becomes a heretic; but whoever combines the two attains the Truth."
Imam Malik
Modern Applications
Bring Ihsan to your professional work—strive to be the most excellent in your field.
Maintain Adab (manners) even when no one is looking.
Transform mundane tasks (cooking, driving) into worship through Ihsan and intention.
Critical Reflection
Do I behave differently when I am alone versus when I am in public?
Is my worship high in quantity but low in quality (Ihsan)?
Am I conscious of Allah's gaze during my most difficult moments?
