Islamic Spirituality - Tazkiyah & Ihsan • Lesson 2.15
Curriculum Breakdown
Divine Watchfulness
Muraqabah is the pinnacle of the spiritual journey. It is the persistent awareness that Allah is watching the movements of your heart and the actions of your body.
Introduction
Muraqabah literally means "to watch." It is the constant realization that: 1. Allah knows my thoughts.
2. Allah sees my actions.
3. Allah is with me wherever I am.
The Station of Excellence
Muraqabah is the practical implementation of Ihsan. It leads to Hayaa (modesty/shame before Allah), which prevents sin even in complete isolation.
Practical Muraqabah
It involves taking moments throughout the day to be silent and internalize: "Allahu Shahidi" (Allah is my Witness), "Allahu Hadiri" (Allah is Present with me), "Allahu Naiziri" (Allah is looking at me).
"The best thing a person can be given is the realization that Allah is watching him."
Abdullah ibn Mubarak
Modern Applications
Use Muraqabah to guard your private internet usage.
When you feel alone or abandoned, use Muraqabah to feel the "proximity" (Qurb) of Allah.
Let the awareness of Allah's gaze make you do your best work even without a manager.
Critical Reflection
If Allah's presence was physically visible, how would my behavior change right now?
Do I feel comforted or terrified by the fact that Allah knows my every thought?
Am I living a "double life" (private vs. public)?
