Islamic Spirituality - Tazkiyah & Ihsan • Lesson 2.13
Curriculum Breakdown
Righteous Companions
We are products of our environment. The quality of our friendships directly impacts the quality of our faith.
Introduction
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "A man is upon the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look into whom he takes as a friend." (Tirmidhi). Good company is like a perfume seller—even if you don't buy, you catch the pleasant scent.
The Criteria for Companionship
Choose friends who: 1. Remind you of Allah when you see them.
2. Increase your knowledge when they speak.
3. Remind you of the Hereafter through their actions.
The Impact of Bad Company
Toxic company is like a blacksmith—you either get burnt by the sparks or at least catch the bad smell. Constant exposure to sin and heedlessness desensitizes the heart.
"Every companion who does not benefit you in your religion, stay away from them."
Malik ibn Dinar
Modern Applications
Audit your "Digital Company"—the influencers and pages you follow are your modern companions.
Be the "righteous companion" for others—be the one who brings them closer to Allah.
Find a "study buddy" or "spiritual mentor" to stay accountable.
Critical Reflection
Do my closest friends make it easier or harder for me to pray on time?
Do we talk about things that matter, or is our talk mostly gossip and dunya?
Am I a positive or a negative influence on those around me?
