Islamic Spirituality - Tazkiyah & Ihsan • Lesson 2.12
Curriculum Breakdown
Spiritual Diseases and Cures
Just as the body gets sick, the heart suffers from spiritual ailments that can destroy faith and happiness. Identifying and treating these is the core of Tazkiyah.
Introduction
Spiritual diseases are hidden and often dangerous because we are unaware of them. "In their hearts is a disease..." (2:10). The primary diseases are Pride (Kibr), Envy (Hasad), Ostentation (Riya'), and Greed (Hirz).
The Disease of Pride (Kibr)
Kibr is rejecting the truth and looking down upon people. Its cure is realizing the true nature of oneself (a servant) and the Greatness of Allah.
The Disease of Envy (Hasad)
Hasad is wishing that a blessing be removed from someone else. Its cure is realizing that Allah is the Just Allotter of blessings, and wishing well for others increases one's own barakah.
The Science of Self-Correction
Tazkiyah is "the medicine of the heart." It involves self-observation (Muraqabah), self-accounting (Muhasabah), and struggling against the lower self (Jihad al-Nafs).
"The one who does not know his own faults will remain in his ignorance forever."
Imam Ghazali
Modern Applications
Recognize that many mental and emotional struggles (anxiety, depression from comparison) have a spiritual root.
Use "opposite actions" for cures: If you feel pride, do a humble service. If you feel envy, pray for the person you envy.
Seek "spiritual checkups" by listening to heart-softening talks (Raqa'iq).
Critical Reflection
Is there a person whose success makes me feel annoyed or unhappy? (Sign of Hasad).
Do I feel superior to those who are less religious than me? (Sign of Kibr).
Am I more concerned with my "online image" than my "spiritual reality"? (Sign of Riya').
Weekly Protocol
Steps to learn this lesson.
