Islamic Spirituality - Tazkiyah & Ihsan • Lesson 2.11
Curriculum Breakdown
Night Prayer
The night prayer is the secret of the righteous. It is the time when the heart is most pure and the soul most receptive to Divine proximity.
Introduction
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Perform the night prayer, for it was the habit of the righteous before you, it is a means of proximity to your Lord, an expiation for sins, and a deterrent from wrongdoing." (Tirmidhi).
The Time of Descent
In the last third of the night, Allah descends to the lowest heaven in a way that befits His Majesty and asks: "Is there anyone asking of Me that I may give to him? Is there anyone asking for forgiveness that I may forgive him?" (Bukhari).
The Sweetness of Tahajjud
Tahajjud is the "prayer of the Elite." It builds exceptional spiritual strength, clarity of mind, and a "Nur" (light) on the face that is visible even to others.
"The best of all gifts is intellect, and the best of all activities is the night prayer."
Ibn al-Mubarak
Modern Applications
Even if you can't wake up for the last third, try to pray at least 2 rakahs after Isha but before sleeping.
Use the quiet of the night for intense, private Dua where you can truly pour out your heart.
Understand that Tahajjud is the most powerful "productivity tool" for the coming day.
Critical Reflection
Have I ever experienced the peace of being alone with Allah while the world sleeps?
What prevents me from waking up for Tahajjud? (Often it is excessive evening talk or dinner).
Do I value my conversation with Allah more than my sleep?
