Family Life in Islam • Lesson 3.8
Curriculum Breakdown

Early Childhood (0-7)

The first seven years are the "years of play and formation" according to Islamic tradition. They lay the foundation for a lifetime of faith.

Introduction

A well-known (though non-prophetic) wisdom says: "Play with them for the first seven, discipline them for the next seven, and befriend them for the next seven." The first seven are about building love and trust.

Love and Mercy

The Prophet (ﷺ) was extremely tender with children. He would carry them during prayer, play with them, and kiss them. He taught that "he is not one of us who did not show mercy to our young." (Tirmidhi).

Indirect Learning

Children at this age learn through observation. Their first concept of "God" is often a reflection of how they see their parents—loving, protective, and firm.

"Whoever has a child should be like a child with them (in play)."

The Prophet (ﷺ)

Modern Applications

  • Limit screen time and encourage "natural play" and exploration.

  • Read stories of the Prophets to your children instead of just generic fairy tales.

  • Celebrate their effort in trying to do good deeds (like "mini-fasting" or trying to pray).

Critical Reflection

  • Is my home a place of laughter for my children?

  • Do my children associate religion with "fear" or with "love"?

  • Am I patient with the natural curiosity and messiness of childhood?

Weekly Protocol

Steps to learn this lesson.

1Get down on the floor and play with your child today for 20 minutes with no distractions.
2Establish a "bedtime Dhikr" routine (reciting short Surahs or Duas together).
3Give your child a "hug of mercy" today, following the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ).
