Family Life in Islam • Lesson 3.15
Curriculum Breakdown
Growing Old Together
The final phase of family life is a time of reaping the fruits of a lifetime of love and faith. It is a period of increased dignity and spiritual preparation.
Introduction
Old age is a blessing. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The best of you is he whose life is long and whose deeds are good." (Tirmidhi). Elderly parents are a source of Barakah in the home.
Companion for Life
The bond between an aging couple should deepen into a profound spiritual companionship. They should support each other in their final journey toward Allah.
Legacy and Will
This phase involves preparing the "Wasiyya" (will) and ensuring that children and grandchildren are left with a legacy of faith (Deen) rather than just wealth.
"He is not one of us who did not show mercy to our young and honor our elders."
The Prophet (ﷺ)
Modern Applications
Make your home "elder-friendly" if you have aging parents living with you.
Involve grandparents in the lives of their grandchildren; they are the link to tradition.
Review your financial and spiritual will to ensure it complies with Shariah.
Critical Reflection
Am I preparing for my own aging with grace and faith?
How am I supporting the elders in my community?
What kind of legacy (spiritual and material) am I currently building?
