Family Life in Islam • Lesson 3.14
Curriculum Breakdown

Domestic Responsibilities

A harmonious home requires teamwork. There is no job too "small" for a believer, following the example of the most noble of creation.

Introduction

The division of labor in the home should be based on "Ma'ruf" (fairness and kindness), not just on cultural stereotypes. Everyone should contribute to the upkeep of the home.

The Example of the Prophet (ﷺ)

When Aisha (ra) was asked what the Prophet (ﷺ) did at home, she said: "He used to be in the service of his family (meaning help with housework), and when the time for prayer came, he would go out to the prayer." (Bukhari).

Respect for Labor

Whether the work is cooking, cleaning, or fix ing, it should be appreciated. Neglecting domestic duties leads to a chaotic environment that affects spiritual focus.

"The order of your home is a reflection of the order of your heart."

Imam Ghazali

Modern Applications

  • Men: Don't wait to be "asked" to help; notice what needs to be done and do it.

  • Women: Allow other family members to help and don't feel you must do everything perfectly on your own.

  • Teach boys and girls equally how to cook, clean, and manage a home.

Critical Reflection

  • Do I take the domestic labor of others in my home for granted?

  • Is my home an environment of "service" or "self-centeredness"?

  • Do I model the Prophet's (ﷺ) habit of being "in the service of his family"?
