Honoring Parents

One of the greatest acts of worship after Tawhid is the honoring of parents. It is a debt that can never be fully repaid.

Introduction

Allah says in the Quran: "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents." (17:23). The rights of parents are linked directly to the rights of Allah.

The Mother's Status

When asked who is most worthy of good companionship, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Your mother," three times, before mentioning "Your father." (Bukhari).

Practical "Birr" (Excellence)

"Birr" goes beyond obedience; it means serving them before they ask, speaking with gentleness, and never saying "Uff" (expression of annoyance) to them.

"The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the father, and the anger of the Lord is in the anger of the father."

The Prophet (ﷺ)

Modern Applications

  • If you live with your parents, take the initiative to help with their needs (tech, health, housework).

  • If you live away, make it a point to call them daily or weekly.

  • Be patient with their aging and changing cognitive abilities.

Critical Reflection

  • Do I treat my parents with the same "Adab" (etiquette) that I show my boss or elders in the community?

  • Do I only call them when I need something?

  • Have I ever truly thanked them for the sacrifices they made for me?

Weekly Protocol

Steps to learn this lesson.

1Call your parents today just to say you love them and thank them for one specific thing from your childhood.
2Perform a task for them today that they usually do themselves (e.g., groceries, cleaning).
3Make the Quranic Dua for them: "Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani sagheera" (My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small).
