Curriculum Breakdown

Modesty and Hayaa

Hayaa is the "inner shielding" that prevents a person from doing what is shameful in the sight of Allah and people.

Introduction

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Every religion has a character, and the character of Islam is modesty (Hayaa)." It covers dress, speech, and private thoughts.

Hayaa with Allah

True modesty is being shy that Allah should see you in a state of sin or negligence. It is the realization of His constant watchfulness.

External Modesty

This includes modest dress and refraining from focalizing on the private affairs or flaws of others.

"Modesty only brings good."

The Prophet (ﷺ)

Modern Applications

  • Practice "Guarding the Gaze" (Ghad al-Basar) in the physical and digital world.

  • Maintain Hayaa in your speech; avoid foul language and crude jokes.

Critical Reflection

  • Do I feel a sense of "shame" before Allah when I slip up?

  • Is my outward modesty matched by inner modesty?

  • Does my digital persona reflect the value of Hayaa?
