Islamic Ethics & Character • Lesson 4.4
Curriculum Breakdown
Humility vs. Arrogance
Humility is the elevator of the soul, while arrogance is its downfall.
Introduction
Tawadu is recognizing that every talent, wealth, or status you have is a gift from Allah, not a result of your own superiority.
The Disease of Arrogance (Kibr)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "He who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise." Pride is defined as rejecting the truth and looking down on people.
The Virtue of Humility
"Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise him in status." (Muslim). True strength lies in recognizing one's own dependence on the Creator.
"Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble so that no one behaves boastfully toward another and no one oppresses another."
The Prophet (ﷺ)
Modern Applications
Be quick to admit when you are wrong.
Serve others, especially those who are socially ranked "below" you.
Listen more than you speak; every person has something to teach you.
Critical Reflection
Do I feel superior to others because of my knowledge, wealth, or even my religiousity?
How do I react when someone corrects me?
Do I seek attention and praise for my accomplishments?
