Daily Life of a Muslim • Lesson 1.9
Curriculum Breakdown

Sleep

Sleep is more than just biological recovery; it is a spiritual state of vulnerability where the soul is in the hands of Allah. The Sunnah provides a method to make sleep an act of worship.

Introduction

The Prophet (ﷺ) had a specific routine for sleep that combined physical preparation with spiritual protection.

Quranic Foundation

"And We made your sleep [a means for] rest." (78:9). Sleep is a sign of our dependence on the Creator.

The Sunnah of Sleep

1. Performing Wudu. 2. Dusting the bed three times. 3. Sleeping on the right side. 4. Placing the right hand under the cheek. 5. Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.

Intention for Tahajjud

Sleeping with the intention to wake up for Fajr or Tahajjud turns the entire sleeping period into a reward.

"With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live (Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya)."

The Prophet (ﷺ)

Modern Applications

  • Keep your sleeping area dark and cool.

  • Avoid heavy meals or intense blue light right before bed.

  • Recite the sleeping Duas as you close your eyes.

Critical Reflection

  • Is my last thought of the day focused on Allah or on my worries?

  • Do I prepare my soul for the possibility of not waking up?

  • How does my quality of sleep change when I follow the Sunnah?
