Daily Life of a Muslim • Lesson 1.6
Curriculum Breakdown

Speech and Social Interactions

A believer is recognized by their character, and the tongue is the primary window into that character. Guarding the tongue is a prerequisite for a sound heart.

Introduction

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent." (Bukhari). Every word is recorded.

Quranic Foundation

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice." (33:70)

Avoiding Ghibah (Backbiting)

Backbiting is compared to eating the flesh of one's dead brother. It destroys relationships and consumes good deeds.

The Power of a Kind Word

"A kind word is charity (Sadaqah)." Positive speech, encouragement, and reconciliation are highly rewarded.

"The tongue is like a lion; if you let it loose, it will wound someone."

Ali ibn Abi Talib

Modern Applications

  • Think for 3 seconds before responding in an argument.

  • Avoid gossiping in group chats or office hallways.

  • Use social media to spread benefit, not conflict.

Critical Reflection

  • Do my words bring people closer to Allah or push them away?

  • How many of my daily conversations involve talking about others negatively?

  • Am I honest even when it is difficult?
