Daily Life of a Muslim • Lesson 1.2
Curriculum Breakdown
Purification and Wudu
Purity (Taharah) is half of faith. In Islam, physical cleanliness is inextricably linked with spiritual readiness.
Introduction
Wudu is not just a physical washing; it is a spiritual reset. Each drop of water that falls from the limbs washes away minor sins committed by those limbs.
Quranic Foundation
"O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles..." (5:6)
The Prophetic Method
The Prophet (ﷺ) performed Wudu with excellence, ensuring every part was reached while being mindful not to waste water, even if he was at a flowing river.
Spiritual Significance
Approaching Allah requires both internal purity (sincerity) and external purity (Wudu). The state of Wudu creates a "noor" (light) on the face and limbs on the Day of Judgment.
"Cleanliness is half of faith (Al-tahuru shatr al-iman)."
The Prophet (ﷺ)
Modern Applications
Be mindful of water usage during Wudu.
Try to stay in a state of Wudu throughout the day to remain "connected".
Reflect on the sins being washed away as you perform each step.
Critical Reflection
Do I rush through my Wudu, or do I treat it as an act of worship?
How does being physically clean affect my focus in prayer?
Am I conscious of the spiritual "light" associated with Wudu?
