Daily Life of a Muslim • Lesson 1.1
Curriculum Breakdown

Waking with Purpose

In Islamic tradition, the day begins with spiritual intentionality. Waking up is considered a minor resurrection, and the first moments determine the spiritual trajectory of the entire day.

Introduction

The first conscious act of a Muslim upon waking should be the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us that waking up is a blessing and a reminder of the Day of Judgment. By starting with purpose, we align our day with Divine will.

Quranic Foundation

"And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening." (76:25). This verse emphasizes the constant need for remembrance, especially at the boundaries of the day.

The Prophetic Morning Routine

1. Rubbing the face to remove the effects of sleep. 2. Reciting the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran. 3. Using the Siwak (tooth-stick). 4. Performing Wudu and Tahajjud if possible.

The Critical Importance of Fajr Prayer

Fajr is the cornerstone of the Muslim day. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The two rakahs of Sunnah for Fajr are better than the world and all that it contains." (Muslim). Missing Fajr intentionally is a sign of spiritual negligence.

Morning Adhkar - The Spiritual Shield

Reciting the morning adhkar (remembrances) protects the believer throughout the day. These include Ayat-ul-Kursi, the three Quls, and specific supplications for protection from harm and seeking barakah (blessing).

"Know that your day is built upon your morning. If you start it well, it will be well; if you start it ill, it will be ill."

Imam Al-Ghazali

Modern Applications

  • Set an alarm that uses Adhan or a pleasant tone to wake up mindfully.

  • Keep a copy of Morning Adhkar by your bedside.

  • Avoid checking your phone immediately; give your first moments to Allah.

Critical Reflection

  • What is the first thing I think about when I wake up?

  • How does missing Fajr affect my mood and productivity for the rest of the day?

  • Do I feel a difference in protection when I recite the morning adhkar?
